What is a Fixed Deposit?

A fixed deposit (FD) locks a lump sum with a bank or NBFC for a chosen tenure at a fixed interest rate. In a cumulative FD the interest is reinvested, so it compounds and you receive the principal and all the interest together at maturity.

FD Maturity Formula

A = P × (1 + r ÷ n)n × t
  • P — deposit amount
  • r — annual interest rate (as a decimal)
  • n — compounding periods per year (4 for quarterly, which most Indian banks use)
  • t — tenure in years

Worked examples

₹1,00,000 at 7% for 5 years, compounded quarterly, matures at ₹1,41,478. The effective annual yield is about 7.19%, a little higher than the quoted rate because of quarterly compounding.

₹5,00,000 at 7.25% for 3 years matures at about ₹6,20,273, earning ₹1,20,273 in interest before tax.

Choosing an FD

  • Compare the effective yield, not just the headline rate, when compounding differs.
  • Ladder your deposits — split money across tenures so some always matures soon.
  • Senior citizen rates are usually 0.25–0.50% higher at most banks.
  • Deposit insurance (DICGC) covers up to ₹5 lakh per depositor per bank, including interest.

Tax on FD Interest

FD interest is fully taxable at your income-tax slab rate. Banks deduct TDS once yearly interest crosses the threshold; you can submit Form 15G or 15H if your total income is below the taxable limit. The results above are before tax.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is FD maturity calculated?

A = P × (1 + r/n)^(n × t), where P is the deposit, r the annual rate, n the number of compounding periods per year (4 for quarterly) and t the tenure in years. ₹1,00,000 at 7% for 5 years with quarterly compounding matures at about ₹1,41,478.

Why is the effective yield higher than the FD rate?

Because interest is added every quarter and then earns interest itself. A 7% rate compounded quarterly gives an effective annual yield of about 7.19%.

Is FD interest taxable?

Yes. FD interest is added to your income and taxed at your slab rate. Banks deduct TDS when interest crosses the yearly threshold, unless you submit Form 15G/15H where eligible. This calculator shows pre-tax figures.
